We’re thrilled to share the latest publication from our Working Group 4 (WG4) at IMMUPARKNET COST Action CA21117, published in Neurochemistry International! Entitled “Non-pharmacological interventions modulating immune response in Parkinson’s disease: Where do we stand for future preventive approaches”, this comprehensive review explores how lifestyle-based interventions may influence immune responses and neuroinflammation in Parkinson’s disease (PD).
The manuscript, authored by Elenamaria Pirovano, Inês P. Silva, Marta Camacho, Asuman Çanak, Busra Aktas, David Crompton, Evrim Gökçe, Fu-Miao Tan, Franca Marino, Josefa Domingos, Mafalda F. Almeida, Cristoforo Comi, Milorad Dragić, and Inês Figueira, represents a collaborative effort to summarize the current evidence on non-pharmacological strategies that could complement conventional PD therapies by targeting immune dysfunction.
📝 The review highlights the growing evidence that immune dysregulation and chronic inflammation occur early in Parkinson’s disease, even before the onset of motor symptoms, opening a potential window for preventive interventions. It discusses the impact of healthy dietary patterns, physical exercise, gut microbiome modulation, fasting-based interventions, vitamins, and bioactive compounds on peripheral and central immune responses, while also identifying current knowledge gaps and future research priorities. Together, these findings support the potential of lifestyle-based approaches as complementary strategies to reduce inflammation and improve the clinical management of PD.
🌟 This research was supported by COST Action IMMUPARKNET (CA21117), reinforcing the importance of international collaboration in advancing our understanding of the immune mechanisms underlying Parkinson’s disease and fostering innovative preventive approaches.
